Ivan Tafrov

Ivan Tafrov (b. 1970, Plovdiv) is one of the most prominent contemporary Bulgarian artists in the field of classical and magical realism. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia (1997), where he won prestigious competitions for self-portraiture and nude drawing as a student. Over the years, he has established himself as an internationally recognized master of detailed portraiture, still life, and landscape painting.

Key International Recognition

• ARC Salon Finalist (USA): He has twice been named a finalist in the world's most prestigious competition for contemporary realism—ranking in the Top 100 for portraiture (2006) and as a finalist in the "Landscape" category (2022/2023).

• Success in London: He was selected for the elite BP Portrait Award competition in London (2007). His works have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, and the Manchester Art Gallery.

• Royal Patronage: He participated in three editions of the Portrait Gala Evening in London, organized under the patronage of Kate Middleton (the Princess of Wales), and his iconic painting "Denitsa" was featured in the anniversary book "500 Portraits," published by the National Portrait Gallery, London.

• Educational Activity: In 2008, he launched the Tafrov Atelier project, which has developed into a highly popular academy for studying the fine techniques of fine art. He also participated in the documentary film "Lucifer," dedicated to the most expensive painting in Bulgaria of the same name, housed in the National Art Gallery in Sofia.
