Atanas Stoykov (1919 – 1988) was a Bulgarian art historian, art critic, journalist, and public figure. As a long-standing member and activist of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP), he held key media positions during the early socialist era, serving as editor-in-chief of Mladezh (Youth) magazine (1946–1949) and the official party newspaper Rabotnichesko Delo (1950–1953). In 1974, he was elected a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).

His extensive bibliography is closely aligned with Marxist-Leninist aesthetics and focuses on three main areas:

  • Ideological Critique of Western Art: He authored foundational texts of the period analyzing modernism and abstraction from a socio-political perspective (e.g., Critique of Abstract Art and its Theories, After the Decline of Abstractionism, Art and Alienation).

  • Monographs on Bulgarian Artists: He researched the evolution of Bulgarian caricature and published detailed studies on prominent national artists such as Aleksandar Bozhinov, Boris Angelushev, Nikola Mirchev, and Ivan Radev.

  • Global and Historical Art Surveys: Stoykov published comprehensive volumes on the art of the United States and Cuba, alongside extensive overviews tracking four decades of Bulgarian socialist art and cultural policy.
