Franz Winterhalter

Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805 – 1873) was a celebrated German painter and lithographer, widely regarded as the most brilliant and sought-after master of court portraiture in the mid-19th century. Born in the Black Forest, he received his academic training in Munich, quickly trading rigid academic methods for a more graceful, flattering, and fashionable portrait style. His exceptional talent for capturing aristocratic opulence and elegance granted him access to Europe's most influential royal circles, serving the courts of Baden, France, Belgium, and Austria. Winterhalter's name remains synonymous with some of the most iconic royal imagery of the era, including the monumental canvas Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting (1855) and his legendary portraits of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi).
