Isaac Ilyich Levitan (1860 – 1900) was a classical Russian landscape painter of Jewish origin, born into a poor but educated family. Despite the early loss of his parents and the subsequent poverty, he graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he later became a professor. Levitan was a close friend of the writer Anton Chekhov and a member of the "Peredvizhniki" (The Wanderers) art movement. His body of work, comprising over 1,000 pieces, is distinguished by a specific style of "mood landscape" that reflects the human soul through pastoral and melancholic Russian scenery.
